Your Shimberg Librarians want you to feel as great and powerful as this little kitty.

Maybe you have to give a PowerPoint presentation to your class?  Maybe you have to submit a review paper at the end of the semester?  Most likely you have to do both.  Yikes!!

What's the best way to impresss & entertain your instructor & colleagues (banish boredom)? What's the best way to move that B up an A?  Images, my friends!!.  I mean real medical images, not precious bits o' clip art, for example:

Visit the Shimberg Health Sciences Library webpage.  Under eResources look for Hardin Medical Directory & Images.MD.  Then let your outer scientist channel your inner graphic designer, and ratchet up what was merely a "good presentation" to "OMG, her presentation was soooo good!"

Another comprehensive source for medical images can be found courtesy of the good Librarians at Duke University.  Visit www.mclibrary.duke.edu/subject/medimages.

Stay tuned for the next installment of this blog which will deal with a topic which we Librarians find nothing short of fascinating....Copyright.  (Really you'll like this).

One of our great and enthusiastic librarians, Allison Howard, discovered a wonderful new resource from MedlinePlus! It's a tutorial that teaches understanding of medical words- and guess what- now it talks! (Thank goodness they don't ask me to pronounce all these words.) Check it out here!

  • Unregistered Trademark
  • Trademark
  • Copyright
We are all vaguely familiar with these symbols. But what do they really mean? Especially to Researchers?
Please plan on attending the informative session being offerred tomorrow by Attorneys from USF's office of General Counsel at 10 a.m. here in the Library on "Copyright for Research." To further entice you we will be serving scrumptious guava pastries, bear claws, and coffee.
We won't be serving this, although we are officially well into October Scholarly Activities Fest...

I wanted to keep you reading and take this learning moment to share with you the fact that the Lowenbrau Lion symbol has been used consistently since 1383 as a registered trademark!! File this factoid under useless information, which may come in handy at a cocktail party, or next time you try out for Jeopardy.
Now one more piece of bid-ness. Tomorrow our BELOVED BULLS will take on Cincinatti here at Raymond James stadium. We all know what it means when we see people represent by wearing their school colors:
bulls
So don't forget USF Health, represent & respect the undefeated BULLS by wearin o' the green & gold tomorrow!!

Hey Hipsters:

Have a great weekend. Take some time off to get your groove on and your mojo back.

For today's agenda I'd like to discuss the following

  • Music. I know I'm dating myself, but lately I've taken a shine to the music of the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson. This amazing quintet was somewhat overshadowed by the Beatles and the entire "British Invasion" of the 60's. I always thought the Beach Boys were a little corny but check out the musicianship and quality of their harmonies on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1LiKpv-VfE.
  • Your opinion. Let me know what music you like and what you think of this blog. Please send your responses to Barbara.
  • Library bid-ness. So when you get back to being a student on Sunday, just remember we're almost at midterms. Yikes, how time does fly when you're having fun. Don't hesitate to take advantage of the expertise of your professionally trained Librarians who man the Reference Desk at the Shimberg Health Sciences Library from 9-5 M-F. We can help you access the library resources, help you format a bibliography, utilize EndNote, and discuss quality of resources with you. Many people feel a bit squeamish about approaching a Librarian. Stop in or call us at 974-2288
  • Maybe you had a bad experience with a cranky Librarian in the past. Trust me we won't bite, and you're not interrupting us. Our job is to HELP you, and that's what we were trained and paid to do. We also enjoy hooking you up with the information you need-- that's why we became Librarians!!

Just remember there are no stupid questions, and....

"Tonsured Head"

Did you know back in the day (12th to 13th c.) scholars were required to wear clerical gowns and be "tonsured?"

We've come a log way baby.  To wit, the most famous scholar of the 20th c:

It ain't easy to be a scholar (don't use ain't if you want to be a scholar).  It takes work and discipline, and it doesn't matter if your head is shaved or not-- it's what's inside your head and heart.  And we're here to help you in your quest toward scholarship

Take advantage of the FREE classes and seminars all month long, during October Scholarly Activities Month.

Rose Bland

Hooray!!  It's National Medical Library Month.  I know you've been waiting for this all year long.  Forget Halloween and free candy, it pales in comparison to learning more about your library, the practice of library science, and your Shimberg Librarians, no?    Have you always wanted to know about “library hand” or how to cultivate your “library voice?”  Well,  maybe not.  But for the rest of this month I'm going to showcase some of our amazing Librarians.  If you see them around campus, stop them and say Hi!!

Recently, I sat down with Rose and asked her a few questions.

B:  Rose what's your "official" job title?
R:  Asssistant Director, Technology and Access Services

B:  Wow, what the heck does that mean?
R:  It means I can help you with accessing all our of wonderful electronic resources (e-journals, e-books, databases)

B:  Rose, what did you do before you were a Librarian?
R:  I'm not allowed to discuss that.  Next question.

B:  What do you like most about your job?
R:  Helping people access what they need, resolving access problems, and negotating with vendors to save us  money.

B:  What do you like least about your job?
R:  Dealing with certain vendors who want to charge us too much!

B:  What would people be surprised to know about you?
R:  I was a military brat and was born in Cristobal, Canal Zone where my dad was stationed for 7 years. I spent a year in Hawaii and came to Florida via New (too cold, but beautiful) Hampshire.

B:  I know Librarians love to read, what’s your favorite book?
R:  I have too many "favorites" and will read anything but currently for non-fiction it would be Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress Free Productivity By David Allen.  It's one of the best personal productivity books I've read.  For fiction I enjoy the Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evanovich.  After a day of dealing with vendors I can sit back and laugh while trying to solve a mystery.  I just finished #15 of the series and it was simply hillarious.

B:  What would you be if you couldn’t be a Librarian (God forbid)?
R: That's a tough one because I would love to try a lot of different things but I'll go with being a pilot.  I've had a few "informal" flying lessons that I really enjoyed and when I played Flight Simulator I didn't crash too often!
I would love to be in the cockpit seeing where we're going instead of squished into a six-inch wide seat.

B:  What’s your favorite resource at the Shimberg Health Sciences Library?
R:  MedlinePlus.gov.  It's produced by the National Library of Medicine and is geared to consumer health.  A wonderful free resource available to everyone.

B:  What do you do in your leisure time?
R:  I like to do things with my children, watch/attend sporting events (Rays, Lighting, Bulls, Bucs -although we need those Bucs to get it together), OK read. You thought I was going to say read first didn't you? I also enjoy travelling.

B:
Do you like to say “Sssh?”
R:  Only to the library staff.

Stay tuned for our next installment of Meet the Librarian.  Better yet, take our Library Quiz at the end of October and win that substantial bag of Peanut M & M s that no on claimed on Friday.
